On the subject of apprenticeships, we would like to draw your attention to the German „Dual Study System“, which is free of charge and where the apprentice even receives the same salary while studying in school.
Learning a profession in Germany is not connected with any training costs – except for academic university education – but the trainee (for short called Azubi in German) even receives a wage payment during his free school education and for additional practical work to be done in a company of an employer with legal training permit. Many employers will offer you a job as professional immediately after you passed your final exam – mostly after 3 years and in case you did a good job.
The starting salary during your vocational training can be, for example, € 1,000. Trainees can apply for additional benefits for transportation costs and housing, or even for food. There is no tax liability at this wage level and about € 200 is withheld from the salary for health insurance, old age insurance and unemployment insurance.
This means that you don’t have to pay for any kind of medical treatment or hospitalization. whatever your sickness might be, and in case you are unable to go to work or to school during your sickness you will receive your full salary from your employer during the next 6 weeks. If your disability will be more than that you will receive a lower payment from the health insurance.
